It’s been called the “Great American Eclipse,” and Jackson Hole has been named by those in the know as one of the best places in the country to watch it. Mid-morning on Aug. 21, 2017, the path of a total eclipse of the sun will cross directly above Teton County and Grand Teton National Park.

This rare event may present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many to view a total eclipse, but for Jackson Hole, it also presents the challenge of extra crowds at a time when the valley is typically already filled with summer visitors.

On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, 37 representatives from local, state and federal government, public lands agencies, business groups and emergency response agencies met to focus on how the community can address gaps in its ability to ensure public safety and enjoyment at the event. In two, half-day workshops, the group worked through a “Threat and Hazard Identification Risk Assessment” (THIRA) to discuss what to prepare for, how stakeholders can share resources, and to determine action plans to ensure risks or hazards can be avoided or lessened.

Teton County Emergency Management Coordinator Rich Ochs explained that the 2016 THIRA process served two concurrent purposes: 1) Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency requires a proactive THIRA on a potential community risk, and 2) The THIRA offered a timely opportunity to enhance interagency and interdepartmental coordination of eclipse event planning, which began months ago for some agencies and will continue community-wide through the summer of 2017.

“In this case, we’re planning for a positive event that we know is going to happen, as opposed to planning for a large-scale disaster that may never happen,” Ochs said. “This was a major planning session. We identified many potential issues that should be addressed, stakeholders brainstormed possible solutions, and we identified the next steps we need to take to move forward. We would like to thank all the attendees for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend.”

Participants discussed preparing for a wide-range of potential impacts from an influx of umbraphiles on the valley, including traffic jams; during-event emergencies, such as fires and accidents; lodging shortages; infrastructure requirements; public information needs and additional public safety staffing.

Communities from coast-to-coast within the path of “totality” — the maximum phase of a total eclipse during which the moon’s disk completely covers the sun — have been marketing for eclipse tourists and bracing for large crowds during the 2017 event.

In Jackson Hole, multiple hotels have reported being sold out for quite some time, Ochs said. Eclipse-watching parties and events throughout the valley are also expected.

From start to finish, the eclipse will last for 2 hours and 43 minutes, with totality lasting 2 minutes and 15 seconds. The next North American total eclipse is in 2024. The next opportunity to see a total eclipse near Wyoming is in 2045 in Colorado and Utah.

Tropical Sails Corp has three tours for the eclipse.  There is limited availability as the tours are all about 3/4 full as of July, 2016.
